Heaven Sent Breathable Baby Mattress- Review

There are so many different baby mattresses out there. It is often a difficult decision on which one to purchase. I have definitely seen my share between my kids, but I have never seen anything like the Heaven Sent Breathable Baby Mattress. Secure Beginnings, the company behind this revolutionary mattress was founded by a father, Kelly, whose close friend lost a child to SIDS. Wanting a safer sleep environment for his baby, he came up with a breathable sleep surface with a passive airflow technology that reduces the build up of carbon dioxide and stops the build up heat thus causing a rise in body temperature- which has been linked to a potential cause of SIDS. After partnering with Julie, who lost a niece to SIDS, Secure Beginnings LLC was born.

Passive airflow technology- ?? Well, this “sleep surface” is not a mattress- per say, but a fabric surface suspended over a wooden frame- it’s almost like your baby is floating on air! And because there is no mattress underneath this allows air to passively flow through the sleep surface. The mattress base also has cut out holes to facilitate air flow. This “breathable” mattress does more than just reduce the risk of SIDS. Because it can be taken off to wash- in the washing machine- YAY!!- it reduces the build up of harmful bacteria. For a germaphobic mom like myself, definitely “heaven sent”. We received for our review a Heaven Sent Sleep Surface and Mattress base for our review. There weren’t very many instructions to read through, but none needed. It was fairly easy to assemble, just place the sleep surface over the bars on the mattress base and zip up. Push the bars down to lock in place and you are done. I did note that I had to remove one siderail  of the crib to install the mattress base, but not a problem.  The surface was comfortable, and is made to hold up to 60 pounds. Everything you need for your little one to sleep is right there, no sheets or bumper pads are needed. The Heaven Sent Sleep Surface has an integrated bumper pad in the design. Small enough so your little ones arms and legs won’t get caught in the bars, but small enough to reduce chance of suffocation. Another great feature of the Heaven Sent Crib Mattress is that it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals, like Phthalates and boric acid- which is found in roach killer, that is a fire retardant found in most crib mattresses. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want roach killer on my babies- I don’t even want to spray it anywhere near them! But yet, our mattress companies are putting it in their mattresses, right next to them!!

Many traditional crib mattresses are treated with fire retardants—chemicals shown to be harmful to humans. Common fire retardants include polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs. These chemicals have been linked to learning disabilities and cancers in humans and should be avoided when selecting a crib mattress. The Heaven Sent crib mattress does not contain any harmful chemicals

A high quality crib mattress fits properly and functions reliably keeping your baby safe from harm. The mattress should fit snuggly inside the crib without any obvious gap between the crib frame and crib mattress. When fit properly, no more than one finger can be inserted between the crib mattress and crib frame.

A conventional crib mattress should be firm enough to prevent suffocation pockets often found in softer foam-filled mattresses. The Heaven Sent crib mattress is fully breathable eliminating soft spots that may cause suffocation.

Studies have shown a link between SIDS cases and the use of second-hand crib mattresses. While you may be tempted to use a hand-me-down crib mattress, purchasing a new crib mattress may be safer for your baby.

If allergies or asthma are a concern in your family, consider a crib mattress that is non-allergenic meaning it will not harbor dust mites. Cotton filled crib mattresses attract dust mites. The Heaven Sent Crib Mattress is the only crib mattress with a removable sleep surface that can be machine-washed at 60 degrees C to kill dust mites that cause allergies.

The only negative thing that I can even mention has nothing to do with the mattress itself. It is the price of the mattress. Already having to buy a crib, spending that much on a mattress is just not an option for some. However, with that said- can you really put a price on the safety of your baby??
