Looking for a baby crib can be a very overwhelming task. You want a safe crib, but you also want a cute crib. Also, depending on your money situation, you could be looking at spending thousands of dollars on your little one. But are the most expensive baby cribs the safest?

Not necessarily. The safest baby cribs are the ones with the fewest bells and whistles. Buy simple. You need somewhere for your baby to sleep, they don’t even know what it looks like. If there is too much detail to the crib infants have been known to become strangled after their clothing becomes caught in the detail-work. If you can afford it, buy a new crib. The older cribs may not adhere to the same standards as the new cribs do. Make sure that the crib you do purchase is JPMA certified. For a list of manufactures that are certified go to WWW.JPMA.ORG. The JPMA discourages the use of heirloom cribs due to the fact that 50 babies a year become strangled after becoming trapped by broken crib parts. Even if your money is low, the JPMA recommends getting a new crib. Your baby’s safety should come first. Another recommended safety tip is to buy your crib mattress at the same time as the crib to ensure a good fit. The rule of thumb is if you can place more than two fingers between the crib mattress and the crib frame, you need to get a different crib mattress. Have fun purchasing your crib for your new little one, but remember safety is more important than cuteness.
